To Hyder, Alaska

The junction of Hwy 37 and 37a

There are days when you just know that everything you have experienced to get to a certain point was worth it - no matter how cold and miserable you had been!

That day was today. We left New Hazleton before 8 a.m. to 49 degrees and sunny skies. We stopped at the 37/37a junction for breakfast and departed to 57 degrees.

Every kilometer of our ride was beautiful. Got to see one black bear.

We arrived in Hyder around 12 p.m.

Sealaska accomodations are sparse to say the least - sparten and rustic are kind words to described our rooms! (In retrospect we decided that dump or armpit were better descriptions. Obviously not on the list of recommended accomedations!) The bar was nice until the smokers arrived. The "cafe" served home made pizza that was very good. The very nice cook gave me the ingredients for her secret chipolte sauce!

We were going to stay two nights but since all the roads in and around Hyder are unpaved we opted to leave tomorrow morning (nothing much to do if you don't have a vehicle that works well on dirt roads.) We did take a walking tour of Hyder and went in to every shop that was open. Some very interesting, and friendly, people live here.

The photo of the bald eagle was taken at the end of the dock in Hyder around 8 p.m. The photo with the Hyder banner - the tiny people to the left of the Hyder banner are us!

It has been a great ride - missed having Steve & Jo with us for the last couple of days.

to New Hazelton, B.C.

World's largest fishing pole - Houston, B.C.

Checking in at the Robbers Roost in New Hazelton, B.C.
The mountain view from our motel in New Hazelton
Michael, Kathy and Clark at Hazelton Landing
Suzanne and Larry in Old Hazelton

By far the best riding day yet - lots of sunshine and the temperature got near 70 at one point.

Great ride!

The motel was okay - they provided rags, a bucket and a hose so we could clean the filthy bikes!

We ate at the restaurant located in the paddle boat. While the food was good the French owner/waitress was rude. The ice tea came in cans. The bread only arrived after we asked for it.

Norton Ranch photos

As I said before - the Norton Ranch is very nice....and the people who operate it are great hosts.\

See that sunshine???

To Prince George, B.C.

Michael getting ready to leave Hope, B.C.
Jo, bundled up to leave Hope, B.C.
Steve, ready to leave.
Larry gearing up.
This is a photo of the river where we had to wait for the crew to clear an accident scene.

We began our day in Hope, B.C. - better weather than the day before, but still chilly, cloudy and a little rain.

We had lunch in Jake's Pub & Grill. Okay, but no great shakes. Lost 1 1/2 hours because service was slow.

We ran into some rain, but for the most part every time we stopped to get gass or take a brake we missed a shower.

The ride was lovely - one can't say enough nice things about the scenery. The roads are in excellent condition and most of the driver's are okay.

We were held up for an hour at one point while the road crews cleaned up from an accident the night before...right next to a river.

It was great to get to the Norton Ranch. Jo's brother Bill and his wife Dagmar are awesome hosts. The ranch is very nice.

To Hope, B.C.

A beautiful morning in Ellensburg, WA - 54 degrees witha 19 mph wind. At least it was sunny.

We all bundled up better than yesterday. We had intended to continue riding on Hwy 97 and then west to Hope, but given the mediocre weather we decided to ride I-90 toward Seattle and get off at exit 22. By the time we were nearing Seattle the clouds gathered and the temperature dropped, but no rain. By taking the route we did we were able to see the beauty of northern Washington state without lots of traffic.

We stopped at the Blue Mountain Grill for lunch because their billboard said "where hungry people stop" - and they were correct.

We crossed into Canada at Sumas, Washington. As you enter Canada there is a COSTCO! The Canadian border guard had no sense of humor - just ask Michael!

There aren't many pictures because we rode steadily all day to arrive in Hope before the weather decided to dump rain on us. Also, not much to see when it is cloudy all day. About the time we asked for a stop to photograph Mt. Ranier the clouds moved in.

This evening we are enjoying the hospitality of the Quality Inn - hot tub, pool, sauna, COMFY beds and kitchette for $85 total - and only 3 blocks away from a restaurant where we can walk and have a beer!

Day 2 - To Ellensburg, WA

Jo in Klamath Falls
Suzanne fueling up in Washington
Michael loading up to leave Klamath Falls
Clark and Kathy pluggin in!
View of the mountains.

We left Klamath Falls at 8 a.m. to sunny skies and COLD temps. Everyone bundled up...even Larry.

We rode Hwy 97 north. We started to go to Crater Lake but the north entrance was closed due to weather. We opted not to go in becaue it would have added another 100 miles to our day.

As we neared the Columbia River the wind turned into an absolute monster. Choose a state with awful wind conditions and put them all into one 200 mile stretch of road and that is what we experienced.

As we got further into Washington the wind abated - until we neared Ellensburg.

We started that day at 42 degrees, it got up to 74 degrees and dropped back down to the mid-50s be day's end.

A miserable day because of the wind, but otherwise a safe ride in some very lovely country. Approximately 440 miles.

To Klamath Falls, OR

Meeting up in Williams, CA - Larry, Michael, Steve and Jo
Clark, Kathy, Jo and Larry in Williams, CA
Lunch stop in Lassen National Park
Lunch stop in Lassen National Park

We met up with our 5 companions in Williams. Lovely day for a ride.

Rather than ride north on I-5 we opted for Highway 99 and then east to Lassen National Park.

Roads were in great condition, clean and dry.

We were all dressed for moderate temperatures. By the time we got to the top of Lassen we were all putting on more clothing. And again when we got farther north.

On arriving in Klamath Falls (without EVER getting on the super slab) the temp. was 50 degrees and windy. Brrrrr.

Jo was looking a little peaked by dinner, but holding up very well for being so sick.

Larry ate something that disagreed with him....fortunately we have an arsenal of meds for just about any event!

Photos uploaded today!
